Chapter 53

Chapter 52 discussed Pharmacology, the study of medications and drugs including their forms, intentions for use, and effects. The medical assistant is responsible for administering the medication and keeping a record of all medications. In our field we must be able to read medication orders, knowing the drug names will help understand what the physician is ordering. Drugs are described in three ways : generic, brand, and chemical name.  A MA must know these names to understand what drug is being given to the patient. A physician’s desk reference can be found in the office so that you can be familiar and know the different names and uses of drugs. Drug classifications were also discussed in chapter 52. Drugs are classified based on the need for a prescription and their potential for addiction. It is important to know the difference between prescription and nonprescription, along with the schedule for controlled substances. The most important topic covered in this chapter is the “ten rights” of drug administration. This is important so the MA knows the proper way to administer medications. These include knowing you have the right patient, medication, dosage, route, time, and documentation. You must also consider the patient has the right to patient education, assessment, evaluation, and the right to refuse. Always use these ten rights before giving your patient any medication. Drugs also can have different side effects and interactions. Things to consider before administering medication to a patient is their age, weight, method of administration, allergies, and tolerance. When working as a medical assistant you must be able to read the physician’s prescription order. Physician’s may use drug abbreviations when writing a order. It is important to know these abbreviations what they mean and if you are able to use them in your office. I gained knowledge about different drugs in this chapter and the importance of all aspects of administering medications, as a medical assistant Pharmacology will play an important role in my career.
