Chapter 52

Chapter 52 Math for Pharmacology discusses the multiple math calculations used with calculating drug dosages. Simple mathematics are used everyday in the medical office such as: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. It is critical to know these when dealing with medication dosage. It is also important to know weights and measurements. A Medical Assistant will be responsible for converting units for dosage calculations. We learned and practice the simple set of metric conversions to multiply or divide by 1000 to get the proper conversion. It is important to understand the basic drug calculations to make sure the correct dose of medication is given. Other factors when figuring out the right dose of drug is the patient’s age, weight, current medications and state of health. During this chapter we practiced different conversions and methods to find the right drug dosage. Chapter 52 taught me how important it is to know general math skills and how serious it is when calculating dosages. The Medical Assistant has a important role when dealing with mathematics in pharmacology any error could be fatal to the patient. It is critical that the MA always double-check all dosages and to be proficient at all medication calculations.
