Chapter 42 Assisting with Minor Surgery, this chapter discussed surgical aseptic technique and minor surgical procedures. During this chapter I learned the responsibilities of a Medical Assistant before and after a surgical procedure. Before the procedure the MA must be able to set up a sterile field. We practiced the first steps of the medical scrub and surgical gloving. After these steps it is time to set up the Mayo Stand. It is important to keep a sterile field when completing this step. Procedures are taking place with opening a sterile packet, dropping the packet, and transferring instruments. This chapter also shows the different types of instruments used in minor surgeries. As a MA we must know what these instruments look like and what they are used for. After setting up the sterile field the Medical Assistant will then prepare the patient for surgery. Giving the patient instructions, informed consent, positioning and draping. After the procedure the role of the MA continues. They will be responsible for informing the patient of their healing process and potential complications. During office visits of the post op patient the MA will have to cleanse the wound, remove sutures or staples, and bandage the wound. Lastly, give the patient instructions on continuing care of the wound at home. Chapter 42 covers the role of assisting with surgeries and the importance of setting up a sterile field and preparing the patient for the procedure.
