Chapter 49, Electrocardiography discusses the medical assistants role in performing EKG’s. The cardiovascular system is explained along with its structure and function. The electrocardiogram sends electrical charges created by the cardiac conduction system and is sensed throughout the body. As a medical assistant we will be responsible for patient information and teaching. As well as knowing how to set up the equipment and knowing the proper placements of the leads. It is important to know the type of EKG you are performing, the standard is the 12 lead EKG. We practiced in class by placing 10 leads in the appropriate places on the body (seen below in image.) After placing the leads in the correct places then MA would perform the EKG. Lastly, the MA must document the procedure and the patient’s problems and concerns. It is important for the MA to get an accurate read on the patient so the specialist can read the report and get the proper results. This chapter helped to understand how to perform EKG’s as well as the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases.
